Who would use Adult Day Care?
Adult day care is the perfect solution for individuals that live in households whose members
work or otherwise may not be available to help them during the day. In addition to meals and
assistance with individual needs, adult day care provides an opportunity to socialize with
others rather than spend the day alone.
What is assisted living?
Assisted living provides intermediate long-term care for individuals who want to live as independently
as possible for as long as possible but cannot live by themselves without support. When you live at
DCDHS, it is no different than living at home -- you and your guests are free to come and go as you
please. (Residents with memory impairments may require some restrictions for their own protection.)
How will I know when the time is right to consider Adult Day Care?
It's challenging to admit you need help, especially if you or a loved one were a highly
independent person used to caring for others all of your life. And, if you're the caregiver,
it may be equally difficult to allow "strangers" to care for a beloved family member. Here
are some signals:
- When you or a family member can no longer structure daily activities;
- When you or a family member are isolated and desire companionship;
- When you or a family member can no longer be safely left at home;
- When you or a family member lives with someone who works outside the home and who is frequently away from home for other reasons.
Are your facilities open on holidays?
Derrick Community Development & Human Services Adult Day Care facilities are closed on major
holidays. Our staff will send reminders to our clients and their representatives well in advance so they
can make other arrangements. In the future, as we implement a program for respite care, we
will offer Adult Day Care services on holidays as well.
Is your Adult Day Care program open during inclement weather?
We may have to close due to severe weather conditions, particularly when it may not be safe to travel
to our facilities. You will be notified by telephone as early as possible. In addition, we will try to have
any closings listed on local radio and television news channels.
Do you offer trial periods?
Yes, for our Adult Day Care program, we welcome visits from prospective clients and would be happy
to have you be our guest for a half-day. Prior to your visit, we may ask you to fill out a few forms
so that we can be sure you receive appropriate care during your visit. You can tour the facility,
be our guest for breakfast and lunch and observe or join in any of our activities during your visit.
Are social activities a primary goal?
They can be depending on a client's individual assessment plan and the activities in which the client wishes
to be involved.
Can you provide all health care services I might need?
Our Medical Director and on-site health care professionals can provide many of the services you may need or
arrange referrals for specialist visits and hospitalization with your insurance company as appropriate.
What if assistance is needed for walking, eating or taking medications?
Our staff is trained to monitor our clients and assist with their individual needs.
